Hello KBDVM, Hope this helps. Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life: and man became a living soul. The breath of God is not in human form, it is a part of Him given to us, without a soul, or spirit, we are nothing. Psalm 31:5, David wrote, "Into thine hand I commit my spirit..." It clearly states we commit our spirit, not our flesh. Jesus says in Mark 14:38, Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. Galatians 5:16-18 goes on to say, "This I say then. Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law." It goes on to talk about the works of the flesh and the fruits of the spirit. I believe we are a spirit that lives in a body, when we die, our spirit leaves our body, therefore like David says, we commit our spirit into God's hand. |

Hi, Caro... Welcome to the forum! That was a very old post to which you responded. :-) That was the one and only question by kbdvm, way back in 2001. However, would you mind a bit of correction from fellow believer who is often in need of correction? You are equating the flesh with the body. This is an error that entered the church from gnostic teaching. If the body itself were evil, how could Christ have had a body? The flesh is also called the fallen nature, the sin nature, or the Adamic nature. This is what Paul meant in Galatians 5:16-18, a very different notion from what Christ meant in Mark 14:38. (The word flesh has several meanings in the Scripture.) Our bodies will one day be resurrected and we will be glorified -- not just our souls. In Him, Doc |
