1 | Has speaking in tongues ceased? | 1 Corinthians | Ephraim | 114205
Acts 2:32 " God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear." Verse 38-39 " Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. THE PROMISE IS FOR YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN AND FOR ALL WHO ARE FAR OFF FOR ALL WHOM THE LORD OUR GOD WILL CALL." Acts 2:14-18 " In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on ALL PEOPLE. yOUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS WILL PROPHESY, YOUR YOUNG MEN WILL SEE VISIONS, YOUR OLD MEN WILL DREAM DREAMS. EVEN ON MY SERVANTS, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT IN THOSE DAYS." Please remember that this scripture is in the context of Peter the apostle explaining the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the speaking in tongues. Saul's Conversion in Acts 9:10 " In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, Ananias! Yes Lord, he answered. The Lord told him, 'Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight. Verse 17-18 " Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, 'Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here has sent me so that you may see again AND BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strenght." Please remember that it was the apostle Paul that gave us the book of Corinthians with chapters 12,13,14 which gives us instruction about the proper use of tongues. and don't forget 14:18 Paul said, " I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you." Now, was Ananias one of the 12 apostles? No. I would encourge you to continue to search the scripture and the Lord will reveal the truth to you. Yes, the Lord wants you to have this gift that was given to the body of Christ on the day of Pentecost. Pentecost was an Old testiment celebration of the in gathering of the harvest. That is what you and I are called to do, bring in the harvest of souls. Our Lord has provided the power to accomplish this commission. Acts 1:8 Jesus said: " But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. God bless! |

2 | Has speaking in tongues ceased? | 1 Corinthians | Searcher56 | 114207
The promise in Acts 2 and Joel are for Israel, only. I believe Paul spoke many different languages, since he visited more places, as a missionary, than anyone else ... the basis of his claim (1 Cor 14:18). Otherwise, how could one man speak more than even two others? |

3 | Has speaking in tongues ceased? | 1 Corinthians | Ephraim | 114302
Please read the entire chapter 14 and you will see that Paul was teaching this young Corinthian church the proper use of tonges. Read it, there is no way you can interpret that 14:18 Paul is talking about languages he learned by study. 14:1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, 14:2 For anyone who speaks ina tongue does not speak to men but to God. INDEED, NO ONE UNDER STANDS HIM; HE UTTERS MYSTERIES WITH HIS SPIRIT. 14:4 HE WHO SPEAKS IN A TONGUE EDIFIES HIMSELF, 14:5 I WOULD LIKE EVERY ONE OF YOU TO SPEAK IN TONGUES, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, UNLESS HE INTERPRETS, so that the church may be edified. 14:13 For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should PRAY THAT HE MAY INTERPRET WHAT HE SAYS. 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, BUT MY MIND IS UNFRUITFUL. So what shall I do? I will pray WITH MY SPIRIT, but I will also pray WITH MY UNDERSTANDING. 14:16 iF YOU ARE PRAISING gOD WITH YOUR SPIRIT, how can one who finds himself among those WHO DO NOT UNDERSTAND SAY AMEN. 14:18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. BUT IN THE CHURCH I WOULD RATHER SPEAK FIVE INTELLIGIBLE WORDS TO INSTRUCT OTHERS THAN TEN THOUSAND WORDS IN A TONGUE. I could go on with the rest of the chapter but I want you to study the scriptures. Their is no way you can interpre this chapter as Paul talking about human languages. Next I will encourage you to read chapter 10 of the book of Acts when the out pouring of the Holy Spirit came upon the Gentiles and they spoke in tongues. And from their on in church history to this day God has given this gift to win the soul of lost humanity. God Bless |

4 | Has speaking in tongues ceased? | 1 Corinthians | Searcher56 | 114304
Scripture ... Act 10:44-46; 1 Cor 12:10, 28, 30, 14:1-28 ... Why did you stop at verse 18 (you didn't need to copy the verses) -- continue to verse 28? You are right he was letting them know, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the proper use of tongues ... and the abuse/misuse of the gift. The abuse/misuse of tongues was that the church was exercising was speaking ecstatic speech, copying the Corinthian pagan temple action. This included more than one person speaking at once. Does this sound familiar? The abuse/misuse of tongues was that the church was elevating the gift. Paul said he rather have them prophesy ... which fits with 1 Cor 12:10, 28, 30, where it is last or next to last. Does this sound familiar? Wherever tongues is mentioned it is a known human language, even in Acts 10:44-46 ... unless it is referring to the abuse/misuse (1 Cor 14:9, 23). I believe the gift of speaking in another language, the hearer understands and the listener doesn't, may exist today ... by stories I have heard. I never said Paul studied these languages. He probably knew, by study (or growing up) Hebrew, Greek and the local language of Tarsus. I add growing up because I know some Japanese because I spent 10 of my first 15 years in Japan ... now have forgotten most of it. |

5 | Has speaking in tongues ceased? | 1 Corinthians | JLY | 114307
I worship in a church that nearly everyone speaks in tongues. I myself speak in tongues and I use it at times when I don't know what to say in prayer, so I pray in tongues. We sing in tongues most Sunday's only for a short time when the Spirit is on us. And in prayer meetings we speak in tongues also but not all at once, and not like it was some sort of religeous act. But when you speak in tongues you talk of secret things: 1Co 14:2 For he who makes use of tongues is not talking to men but to God; because no one has the sense of what he is saying; but in the Spirit he is talking of secret things. |

Scripture ... 1 Cor 14:26-28 ................ Whether your church sings, prays, or speak in tongues (even for a ort time) and - more than one person is doing it at a time - then is interpeted - and at the most two or three do it in a service ... it is a violation of Scripture. Do you know what that means. Again, the gift of tongues is a known language to at least one hearer. Why do people excerise a minor gift - prophecy is better and the other gifts too. |

7 | Has speaking in tongues ceased? | 1 Corinthians | JLY | 114310
No, you are wrong my friend. When we sing in tongues its in worship of God. God give that gift of tongues to be used. Now every Sunday God talks to us through one person (not the same person though each Sunday it might be a different person) this person will speak in tongues and there is an interpretation of this. No one else speaks while that person is speaking. Its one person speaking in tongues and another giving an interpretation of it. Therefor it is Scripturely right. No church is the perfect church, and no church gets it spot on. You are judging friend and you don't know us or anything about us. We are not a cult we are a God fearing God loving fellowship. Bless you.
8 | Do you sing in tongues together? | 1 Corinthians | Searcher56 | 114313
"When we sing in tongues its in worship of God." It sounds like your church does it together. ... If more than one person sings at a time (at the most 2 or 3 with interpetation between) - it violates Scripture (1 Cor 14:26-28). God judges you. ... Also what is your defintion of worship ... cite Scripture. |

9 | Do you sing in tongues together? | 1 Corinthians | JLY | 114331
One starts of singing in tongues, and you are not forced to join in, you don't really need to sing in tongues but its like the Spirit leads you to do so you just can't stay quiet. Its not the pastor or an elder saying, "Right we are going to sing in tongues now." It just happens. And it generally happens when we have been singing songs in English, songs of praise and worship to Jesus. You have to be there to know what it is really like, and we are not the only church to do it. Read the Scriptures man, "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues." All of them collectively began to speak in tongues. Act 10:46 And they were talking in tongues, and giving glory to God." again "All of them together." There is nothing wrong with a church glorifying God in tongues. When Prophesying it comes from one person in tongues, but there is a time when everyone just falls silent because the peace of the Lord has filled the hall and the Spirit of God is moving and God speaks. I will not be condemned over this (Rom. 8:1) we as a church are doing no wrong. We have a very loving and Spirit filled pastor who is very close to God. And we have a church who moves in all the spiritual gifts of the Lord, and the love of Jesus is in this place. Its the one thing that visitors notice and that is the love of God that is in this church. |

Acts 2:4 does say "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues." ... but, if you look at the verses (5-13), you will see they heard someone speak in their birth language. I believe the speakers spread out so hearers heard only their language. Acts 10:46 was not a church setting, it was a sign to the Jews ... and God comments what your church does (1 Cor 14:26-28) ... and you have yet to defend yourself on this passage. |

11 | Do you sing in tongues together? | 1 Corinthians | JLY | 114349
Acts 10:46 was nothing to do with the Jews it was Peter visiting some Gentiles. And you notice that when he went in they were "All" talking in tongues. And as it not being a church setting, Jesus said, "On this rock I will build MY church." Where Peter was, there was the rock of the church. And churches started with house meetings then when the grew the moved into bigger buildings. At Pentecost there was a church meeting, it says, Acts 2:1"They were all together in one place." The church is the people not the building. It wouldn't matter if it was a garden shed when they were all together there was the church. And when they were baptised in the Holy Spirit they "ALL" began to speak in tongues."
12 | Do you sing in tongues together? | 1 Corinthians | Searcher56 | 114365
The bottom line is that you church violates Scripture (1 Cor 14:26-28). End of my discussion with you on this.
13 | Do you sing in tongues together? | 1 Corinthians | JLY | 114420
You judge something that you know nothing about. The church starts at 10am and finishes at 1pm. Three hours. Of that time tongues is used for about ten minutes, that violates nothing but honours God. The trouble with religeous people like you is that you do not know how to honour God. You love you self, just like the Pharisees. You are so quick to judge. The Corinthians were being told off by Paul, in three hours of service they probably spent half that time in tongues. You say you want the higher spiritual gifts how can you get them with so much judgement and jealousy. You read the Scripture but you don't understand them, try sitting down and listening to God instead of trying to show how cleaver you are. God bless you. |
