Bible Question: I'm curious if anyone believes 1 Corinthians 13:8-13 is saying miraculous gifts such as speaking in tongues are done away with? One thing in scripture is that the Apostles placed their hands on people and gave the gift, but once received, those people were never able to pass it on to anyone else. Thus I believe it died off with the last Apostle, and wasn't necessary once the church had been started. |
Bible Answer: Acts 2:32 " God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear." Verse 38-39 " Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. THE PROMISE IS FOR YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN AND FOR ALL WHO ARE FAR OFF FOR ALL WHOM THE LORD OUR GOD WILL CALL." Acts 2:14-18 " In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on ALL PEOPLE. yOUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS WILL PROPHESY, YOUR YOUNG MEN WILL SEE VISIONS, YOUR OLD MEN WILL DREAM DREAMS. EVEN ON MY SERVANTS, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT IN THOSE DAYS." Please remember that this scripture is in the context of Peter the apostle explaining the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the speaking in tongues. Saul's Conversion in Acts 9:10 " In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, Ananias! Yes Lord, he answered. The Lord told him, 'Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight. Verse 17-18 " Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, 'Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here has sent me so that you may see again AND BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strenght." Please remember that it was the apostle Paul that gave us the book of Corinthians with chapters 12,13,14 which gives us instruction about the proper use of tongues. and don't forget 14:18 Paul said, " I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you." Now, was Ananias one of the 12 apostles? No. I would encourge you to continue to search the scripture and the Lord will reveal the truth to you. Yes, the Lord wants you to have this gift that was given to the body of Christ on the day of Pentecost. Pentecost was an Old testiment celebration of the in gathering of the harvest. That is what you and I are called to do, bring in the harvest of souls. Our Lord has provided the power to accomplish this commission. Acts 1:8 Jesus said: " But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. God bless! |
