Subject: Has speaking in tongues ceased? |
Bible Note: Scripture ... Act 10:44-46; 1 Cor 12:10, 28, 30, 14:1-28 ... Why did you stop at verse 18 (you didn't need to copy the verses) -- continue to verse 28? You are right he was letting them know, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the proper use of tongues ... and the abuse/misuse of the gift. The abuse/misuse of tongues was that the church was exercising was speaking ecstatic speech, copying the Corinthian pagan temple action. This included more than one person speaking at once. Does this sound familiar? The abuse/misuse of tongues was that the church was elevating the gift. Paul said he rather have them prophesy ... which fits with 1 Cor 12:10, 28, 30, where it is last or next to last. Does this sound familiar? Wherever tongues is mentioned it is a known human language, even in Acts 10:44-46 ... unless it is referring to the abuse/misuse (1 Cor 14:9, 23). I believe the gift of speaking in another language, the hearer understands and the listener doesn't, may exist today ... by stories I have heard. I never said Paul studied these languages. He probably knew, by study (or growing up) Hebrew, Greek and the local language of Tarsus. I add growing up because I know some Japanese because I spent 10 of my first 15 years in Japan ... now have forgotten most of it. |
