Greetings Colin, Concerning Jeremiah 3:16, Young's Literal Translation includes "heart" as well as the LITV, as you have mentioned. Most every other translation that I have consulted uses 'mind' like the KJV. As for Psalm 139:13, the KJV is almost incomprehensible. The NASB seems to be the superior translation, when compared to the KJV here. I also favor the RSV and ESV renditions of this verse over that of the KJV. The NKJV is also an improvement, and the LITV states, "You have possessed my inward parts", which seems a little vague. Excellent note on 1 Timothy 6:6, and I agree! Today's English Version renders this verse like this: "Well, religion does make a man very rich, if he is satisfied with what he has." :-) The Amplified Bible has an excellent exposition here, "[And it is, indeed, a source of immense profit, for] godliness accompanied with contentment (that contentment which is a sense of inward sufficiency) is great and abundant gain." The NRSV translates 1 Tim. 6:6 as "Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment;". But the NAB (New American Bible) seems to get this verse completely wrong by stating, "Indeed, religion with contentment is a great gain." However, that doesn't surprise me about the NAB. :-) The International Standard Version [ISV] also seems to miss the mark as well by stating, "Of course, godliness with contentment does bring a great profit." But of course, I am speaking from my point of view. I know what you mean about the NASB! I would have liked to converse with one such as your friend who wore out his old NASB! I'm sure that we could have collaborated with our familiarities on certain passages in the NASB, past and present.. Blessings to you, Makarios |

I miss my friend a lot. He once said to me, "It doesn't matter what you read, as long as you read." As I type this I realize what solid advice that is. What, by the way, do you make of 1Jo 4.19 "We love Him, because He first loved us." (KJV), versus, "We love, because He first loved us." (NASB)? This seems an intrinsic difference between the CT and TR, and the two are almost a world apart, don't you think? I'm also enjoying our other string. Colin. |

Good morning, Colin! 1 John 4:19 is one of those "idiosyncracies" in which I most certainly prefer the KJV/NKJV rendering over that of the NASB (Critical Text). Here are the textual study notes from the NET Bible concerning this verse.. "4:19 We love [48] because he loved us first." "[48] sn No object is supplied for the verb love (the author with his propensity for obscurity has left it to the readers to supply the object). The obvious objects that could be supplied from the context are either God himself or other believers (the brethren). It may well be that the author has both in mind at this point; the statement is general enough to cover both alternatives, although the following verse puts more emphasis on love for the brethren." In my view, we need the direct object ("God" or "Him") to be included in the verse in order to properly translate this sentence from Greek to English. So I definitely prefer the NKJV/KJV rendition over that of the NASB/NIV/ESV. Another place where I prefer the NKJV/KJV rendition over that of the NASB is in Acts 8:36-38. The NASB includes verse 37, although in brackets, but most Critical Text family translations do not. It has always bothered me that this verse is not included in the Critical Text translations, even though I know and realize the reasoning behind why they chose not to include it or to put it in the margin, etc.. However, I will have to expound on that at a later time, my friend! Blessings to you, Makarios |

Makarios, my first son had a difficult birth, and as things started looking dicey I remember nearly fainting (this was before I'd come to the Lord), not from the shock of his birth, but from the thought I might lose him. In my dizziness I told God that I would take him as he was, no matter what. Everything turned out fine, but I realized at the time how much I loved my son, even though we had only just met. I might never have known this, and it struck me that this love had come from outside into my heart as a gift. Later I realized this gift was from God. My son's birth was my first giant step in the direction of God. When I first came upon 1 John 4.19 it was the NASB, and it had particular poignancy for me in light of my son's birth. I felt as though I'd lived an undertanding of that verse. When I saw it again in the KJV, this time with God as the object, I saw another truth, that our love for others is love for Him, but that we'd have never known this emotion had he not formed us from dust to feel it. This, for me, is a titanic difference between the 2 verses. The NASB marginal note for Acts 8.37 says "Early mss do not contain this v." The first link I sent you does a good job with the "early mss" thing. I don't see how V.36-37 can exist without V. 37, can you? Colin |

Colin, Thank you for that wonderful testimony! I appreciate your sharing what this verse has meant to you (in different ways). What struck me when I first read this verse was that we would not have love or know love if God had not at first shown His endless love for us. But, with the birth of your son, I see where it could have such a great, poignant meaning that has imprinted you for life. If I ever have the opportunity for marriage, and then a son or daughter, perhaps the Lord will help me to understand the great depths of love in the ways that you have, my friend. Blessings to you, Makarios |
