Bible Note: Good morning, Colin! 1 John 4:19 is one of those "idiosyncracies" in which I most certainly prefer the KJV/NKJV rendering over that of the NASB (Critical Text). Here are the textual study notes from the NET Bible concerning this verse.. "4:19 We love [48] because he loved us first." "[48] sn No object is supplied for the verb love (the author with his propensity for obscurity has left it to the readers to supply the object). The obvious objects that could be supplied from the context are either God himself or other believers (the brethren). It may well be that the author has both in mind at this point; the statement is general enough to cover both alternatives, although the following verse puts more emphasis on love for the brethren." In my view, we need the direct object ("God" or "Him") to be included in the verse in order to properly translate this sentence from Greek to English. So I definitely prefer the NKJV/KJV rendition over that of the NASB/NIV/ESV. Another place where I prefer the NKJV/KJV rendition over that of the NASB is in Acts 8:36-38. The NASB includes verse 37, although in brackets, but most Critical Text family translations do not. It has always bothered me that this verse is not included in the Critical Text translations, even though I know and realize the reasoning behind why they chose not to include it or to put it in the margin, etc.. However, I will have to expound on that at a later time, my friend! Blessings to you, Makarios |
