Bible Note: Makarios, my first son had a difficult birth, and as things started looking dicey I remember nearly fainting (this was before I'd come to the Lord), not from the shock of his birth, but from the thought I might lose him. In my dizziness I told God that I would take him as he was, no matter what. Everything turned out fine, but I realized at the time how much I loved my son, even though we had only just met. I might never have known this, and it struck me that this love had come from outside into my heart as a gift. Later I realized this gift was from God. My son's birth was my first giant step in the direction of God. When I first came upon 1 John 4.19 it was the NASB, and it had particular poignancy for me in light of my son's birth. I felt as though I'd lived an undertanding of that verse. When I saw it again in the KJV, this time with God as the object, I saw another truth, that our love for others is love for Him, but that we'd have never known this emotion had he not formed us from dust to feel it. This, for me, is a titanic difference between the 2 verses. The NASB marginal note for Acts 8.37 says "Early mss do not contain this v." The first link I sent you does a good job with the "early mss" thing. I don't see how V.36-37 can exist without V. 37, can you? Colin |
