Hello, I'm not a Christian, but I'm very curious about the smaller details of organized religion. Recently a friend told me that Jesus died on the cross so that we would be released from our sins, and the (clearly pretty nutsy) laws in Leviticus. (like the shellfish one, selling your wife, etc.) I was just wondering if that's correct? Thank you! |

The laws you talk about were statues, principals, commands and laws that were given by God to a group of people whose understanding of social conduct was learned from years of dog eat dog slavery which experienced for 400 years. Those laws in many cases separated the people from the rest of mankind so they would be special to God. Also many of the rituals and various requirements placed on them by God pointed to man's need for a Messiah. Jesus when he came fulfilled many of the rituals, rituals that were part of the LAW and with others He continued them on by saying love God with you total being, heart, mind and spirit. And love your neighbor as yourself. Hard to get into too much trouble if you follow those simple commands. So while you may view those laws as foolishness the keeping of them kept the people focused on God instead of their own self indulgence, gave them a code for social conduct that is even incorporated in the law of most countries today, and most importantly kept them focused on the need for a Messiah. That Messiah Jesus Christ came and died as payment for their sins but not their alone but for yours also. Think about that. |

Edb: Very well done answer. Sometimes it's hard to give enough information without writing a book, at least for me anyway. Merry Christmas Edb. justme |
