Dear John, No, what my pastor is talking about is progressive sanctification or growth in holiness. In other words, God's work in the regenerate is to conform him to the image of His Son. This process is gradual, but certain, in this lifetime, but becomes complete in the final step of the ordo salutis: glorification. You see, there's a false teaching going around out there that a person can be saved -- deriving the benefits of justification -- while continuing to live the life of a reprobate. That just doesn't happen. When God changes the very DNA (so to speak) of the tree, it can't help but bear fruit in keeping with its new nature. Try as you may, you harvest apples from a bramble bush. Nor can an apple tree produce brambles. Salvation is a fundamentally transformative process. The general bent of a regenerate life will be righteousness. In Him, Doc |
