1 | IM PREACHING ON SUNDAY.................. | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 119331
CDBJ I know what you mean. I love new Christians they get right up into peoples faces and preach, and wonder why everyone avoids them like the plague. I live near USF and on campus they have a weekly rummage sell on the "commons". A young evangelist was in town and he talked about the what a ripe harvest filed the campus was and that he there every week during the sale. I told him I would meet him. I never found him. But what I found was interesting. The Mormons had two very articulate young men sharing their faith. the Jehovah Witnesses had a group nicely dressed sharing their faith. The witches had two lovely ladies sharing their faith. And the atheist had about 4 of sharpest most logic sounding people there sharing their lack of faith. All these people were college campus age and all were very nice to talk to, very sociable and very out going. I then found the Christian representation, I figure the guy burned his brain out about 15 years ago on drugs, you really couldn’t talk to him, he ranted and raved about people going to hell. I told this story to show the problem within the Christian community all these other various groups had representation from among the student body but the not the Christians. To get a Christian presence there is now a paid ChiAlpha missionary on campus but as far as I know no Christian students willing to be a visible Christian witness. EdB |

2 | IM PREACHING ON SUNDAY.................. | Bible general Archive 2 | BradK | 119333
EdB, You offer a good observation. Relatability is huge! Having some sort of relationship with the intended audience can help to "break the ice". Sometimes I think it is more about HOW we approach and present the gospel because first impressions can be just that. A couple of years ago, I was in San Francisco waiting to get on the Cable Car, and a gentleman was doing much the same, ranting and raving about judgement and hell. He was certainly getting the message out, but it did make me wonder whether he was being as effective as he could. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Hi Brad, I have found out over the years that one has to win the opportunity to talk to others about Christ and God uses prepared people. 1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: I think the word fear, PHOBOS in the Koine Greek, means be careful that you present strictly the truth of God’s word, and be careful that you don’t muddy up the water by being too pushy! It’s the work of the Holy Spirit that causes God’s word to take root and grow in the good ground we can only sow the seed and water it a little with TLC. CDBJ |

CDBJ I have found the best witness tool is relationship. The more you know about a person the more you have to work with. I think too many walk up to people and try to witness, when they should first try to establish a relationship then try to witness. It doesn't have to be a deep relationship just some common ground you both stand on. EdB |

Ed, in line with your post about establishing relationships in connection with witnessing to others -- and I certainly have no problem with that proposition -- there is a fragment of a quote running through my mind, a quote that I heard or read some time ago. It goes roughly like this: "Share the gospel with your friends, family and associates. Use words when necessary." The point of course that the author of the quote was making is that our own lives speak louder than our words. Do you, or does anyone reading this page, happen to know the source of this quote which I have reproduced as accurately as I can recall it? --Hank

Hank, This quote, "Preach the Gospel always and if necessary use words", is often attributed to St Francis of Asissi. Whether the attribution is accurate I do not know. Emmaus |

Emmaus: The quote does have a Franciscan ring to it. I did a little research this afternoon which confirmed what you said, that St. Francis of Assisi is the likely author. ..... It is for his simple prayer that he is perhaps most remembered. I've always thought it to be one of the most beautiful prayers in the world outside of Scripture. I love it so much that I've decided to share it on this page with anyone who may not be familiar with it: THE PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI -- O Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace! ... Where there is hatred, let me sow love ... Where there is injury, pardon; ... Where there is discord, harmony; ... Where there is doubt, faith; ... Where there is despair, hope; ... Where there is darkness, light, and ... Where there is sorrow, joy. ... Oh Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life." --Hank
