Ken John Actually God's word is silent on this issue. I believe this is because God and Jesus are more concerned with our spirits than our physical bodies that are passing away. After burial the body goes through a process called decomposition, or form of oxidation. The process of cremation is exactly the same process only sped up. A body that is fully decomposed is reduced to dust or ashes and this is exactly what happens in cremation the body is reduced to dust or ashes. Also we have no insurance that 50 100 even 500 years from now our bodies will not be dug up and examined. Who knows perhaps our bones will become a museum exhibit that people will view wondering about the 21st century people. Or perhaps the whole cemetery will be dug up and all the remains dumped into a mass grave to make room for a new school, hospital high rise building. Personally I want my body treated with dignity and the only way to insure that today is to be cremated. Psalm 139 verse 14-16 assures us that God knows our substances and has noted them in His book so that when the day of resurrection comes God can recreate our bodies perfectly whether we were buried or cremated. Thanks brother EdB for your comforting reply to my question about cremation for us believers in Christ. I feel that what you have written is realistic as our bodies return to dust. Some of us are burned in house/car/forest fires, drowned or blown to pieces so who know what condition we eventually end up in. Pastor Perry Rockwood of Halifax has this to say about cremation. Here is an extract for you info. "Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price:therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's(1 Corinthians 6:19-20).One of the great Bible doctrines which has almost been forgotten in the last few years is the sanctity of the Christian's body. This text plainly states that our bodies are not our own to do with as we please. They belong to God because of creation and redemption. They are holy because they are cleansed and sanctified by the blood of Christ. They are also temples of the Holy Spirit and members of the body of Christ. These and many other Bible statements clearly set forth the truth of the divine ownership and sanctity of the Christian's body.In dealing with this question of cremation we must not ignore the positive statements of Scripture if we would sincerely seek the Christian position on this issue. We know that in many localities a question of this kind is of little importance. In places far from large cities the question of cremation is seldom,if ever, raised; but in thickly populated areas this is not the case. When a relative passes on, the question comes up: shall it be cremation or burial? Questions have been asked by intelligent people: Is it wrong for a Christian's body to be cremated? Is it true that the body comes to life in the process of cremation? Recently, I was asked, "Why is cremation unpopular in Christian lands?"I frankly admit I have not the last word on these questions, but confess I have given serious and prolonged thought to the question of Christian burial. What I may say is not the result of an overnight meditation or snap judgment. This sermon has been called forth as a result of questions put to me by sincere people and also because of doubts and questions in my own mind over a period of years. I am giving what I have gleaned in the hope that others will find the answers to their questions on this subject." I have only quoted some of his lengthy sermon on this subject. His website www.tpgh.org/archive will give you the full story for anyone who would be interested. In Christ, KJ |

Ken John Good site. Let me add in this day and age where nothing is sacred I have seen a whole cemetery dug up with most coffins totally destroyed. Of the ones that survived the digging they were reburied in a slit trench one beside the other with no thought of husband wife or family relationship. Best estimates figured over half the bodies were lost or had suffered such severe damage that the original bodies were no longer intact. In other words pieces were scattered everywhere. This was done so a road could be put through. The other thing that really bothers me is the outrageous prices charged for a “normal” burial. Most of the time this is done by a grieving family that is encouraged to spend more to show their true love and sense of lost. Terms like “this is your loved one, surely few extra dollars to bury him right is going to be money well spent” or “Sure we can do it cheaper but is that what you really want? Just any old thing. Don’t you think a meaningful last goodbye is in order here?” In any case whether buried or cremated do your self, your family, everyone a favor make and provide for your last wishes before the actual event. Many funeral homes have prepaid, prearranged packages. This what my parents did and let me tell you it was a blessing not having to deal with any arrangements at the time. Truly they had great love for me by sparing me this agony. I will do the same for my loved ones. EdB |
