I squirm when I pick up a different translation of the Bible than the KJV, trying hard to get use to the NASB but when I read the NASB the KJV is right beside me, pretty much saying to me. I'm here if you need me. And every time I go out to get a different version of the bible I always end up getting a KJV. So I think this Christmas I will tell every one I want different versions of the bible that way I don't have a say in it. God Bless you, Darcy |

Darcy I loved my NASB but then I found two problems. One when I read it loud the word usage and placement would cause me to become tongue tied at times. I felt very uncomfortable reading it aloud. I even have the problem with the updated version. I have seen similar comments on this, referring to the problem as the, “wording is wooden.” Second I bought a very expensive (129 plus) copy of the NASB updated version and the gold gilding on the page edges instead of protecting the pages from moisture as designed washed off. None of my other Bibles ever exhibited this problem, even a cheap 9.95 imitation leather one. I went back to Lockman and they basically said tough, even though there is a supposed lifetime guarantee. Since my disillusionment with the NASB, for the two above reasons, I found that in spite of Lockman’s claim that the NASB is the most literal. Most Bible experts consider the KJV and NKJV equal to it in regards to literalness. In fact many feel the KJV is actually closer to the originals than the NASB. Maybe you may want to stick to your KJV EdB |

Greetings Ed! I'm sure that if we all set our minds to seriously "pick out" the "most literal" of all Bible translations, that we all may just pick out a different translation for one reason or another.. :-) But I do agree with your assessment, that the NASB and KJV and NKJV are all 'very close'. There are many places where I like the KJV, and still others where the NKJV seems to get the best of them.. And there are things that I like out of the ESV that seems to be even 'more literal' than the NASB.. However, the NASB seems to win out more frequently than the others when I do a verse by verse comparison through the entire New Testament.. Even so, I absolutely dislike the way the NASB renders Isaiah 53:6, which is my favorite verse! To this day, I have and quote this verse out of the KJV (and ESV) instead of the NASB for the way that the NASB has rendered this verse (even though the NASB at the same time has made a literal rendering of it).. "All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned every one to his own way, but the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all." (Nolan's version :-) ) |
