1 | Greek genitive cases of the word "of" | OT general | Ray | 69098
Hi Emmaus, I don't see water baptism in Ephesians 1:13. If there is any baptism there it is the baptism of the holy spirit. Ephesians 1:17, "that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him." I agree that Makarios came up with a good question. From the heart, Ray |

2 | Greek genitive cases of the word "of" | OT general | Emmaus | 69116
Ray, I understand why you might not see "water baptism" in Eph 1:13 if you do not believe in baptismal regeneration. But for those that do, it is not just "water baptism," but a baptism of "water and the Spirit" in the one event. That is the essence of a sacrament for those who believe that sacraments are signs instituted by Christ to give grace. Emmaus |

Hi Emmaus, I am afraid that we will have to agree to disagree on the sacraments and especially the number of them. We would also have to talk together about "a baptism of 'water and the Spirit'" according to John 1:5. I do not see that phrase as talking of one event. As far as Ephesians 1:13, I certainly don't see infant baptism in the verse because it talks of "after listening to the message..." What are your thoughts about being "sealed"? From the heart, Ray |

Ray, "What are your thoughts about being "sealed"?" I will put it in an adult baptism context. My wife was raised a Methodist, but her mother believed in adult baptism. My wife practised the Methodist faith and taught Sunday school for Children when she was in her teens. But she was never baptized until at age 38 she decided, much to my surprise, to enter the Catholic Church. When she was baptized at the Easter Vigil Mass, she was immediatley Confirmed by an annointing with chrism oil as hands were laid on her, with the words "Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit." That is the adult rite of baptism in the Catholic Church. Perhaps that explains why I see baptismal connotations in Eph 1:13. There is an old Latin phrase used in the Catholic Church: "lex orendi, lex credendi," the rule of prayer is the rule of faith, or put another way, as we pray so we believe. Emmaus |

Hi Emmaus, I am late in responding to you, but I am trying to answer everyone. I only wanted to say in response to the annointing that you spoke of, that I look at it a little differently. Your wife was annointed with the words "Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit". I think of the Holy Spirit as the Giver and the holy spirit as the gift. I think that the "case" of the word gift is as important as differentiating between thinking of Jesus as a man or as a Man when we think of eating His flesh in communion. John 6:52, "The Jews therefore began to argue with one another, saying, "How can this man [Man, NKJ] give us His flesh to eat?" Jesus therefore said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves." When one thinks of Christ as Holy Spirit instead of just a man, then he can understand this gift of holy spirit of which we partake and which is given to us. I believe that it is the spirit which gives life; the flesh profits nothing. John 6:63. From the heart, Ray |

Ray, I see it this way. The reason Gift is capitalized is because the Gift is the Holy Spirit. But He is a Gift from Christ whom Christ promised to send. Thanks for your response. Emmaus |

Hi Emmaus, It is good to have you on the forum. The capitalization of words shows "interpretation" rather than translation. In this case you choose Gift and I choose gift. As a member of the RCC you would probably choose "Mother" of God to describe Mary. I would put it as the lower case "mother". Someday we will learn the more accurate interpretations. I suppose we may have to wait until heaven when we learn from the Teacher. Job 37:22, "Behold, God is exalted in His [spiritual?] power; Who is a teacher like (Him)? 23 Who has appointed Him His way, And who has said, 'Thou hast done wrong'? 24 Remember that you should exalt His work, Of which men have sung." 1) We have all seen His work, but we see it from afar. Isaiah 30:20, "Although the Lord has given you bread of privation and water of oppression, (He), your Teacher will no longer hide Himself, but your eyes will behold your Teacher." 2) My hope is that all men will get to know Him. I trust that we can know the Teacher better while we are here on earth. From the heart, Ray |
