Dear ssv1, Paul in I Cor.7:14 says they are holy and I believe that because the parents are Christians they will be taught to know and love the Lord; but they still will have that free choice when they mature. As someone once said, God has no grandchildren. Salvation is not automatic just because of physical family lines. I believe this is what Jesus was saying in Matthew 3:7-9 and Luke 3:8-9 when He spoke to those Jews who considered themselves heirs of the faith of Abraham because they were Jews by birth and they paid no attention to how they lived their lives or even understood the meaning of faith. "Holy" does not mean "saved." It means "set apart for a special purpose." Children of believing parents are participants in God's covenant community known as the church. This is not an automatic ticket to heaven, but places them under the teaching of God's word and brings them God's blessings resulting from communal Christian living that those on the outside do not enjoy. Ordinarily, with the obedience of the parents in teaching them to love Christ, and the ministry of the word in the church, these children do get born again. --Joe! |
