1 | The inevitable BUT... | 1 John 1:9 | Inerrant Word | 2968
I believe that there are two levels of forgiveness. (1) The LEGAL act of forgiveness that was accomplished by the shed blood of Jesus Christ and applied to our spirits upon salvation. (2) The INTIMATE act of forgiveness that restores our communion with God. I'm sure we would agree that justification indeed permanent and that we "wear" Christ's righteousness. But you are asking why would we need to be "cleansed from all unrighteousness" ... This question begs the answer that there are two different aspects to forgiveness. One involves justification and the other involves sanctification.
2 | Legal/intimate? Judicial/parental? Huh? | 1 John 1:9 | Lifer1J511 | 3013
Thanks for your response. I, too, have also heard that there are 2 levels of forgiveness. The terms I've heard are Judicial and Parental forgiveness and also Positional and Practical forgiveness. I have heard that these coincide with the sanctification that you mention. These views may have some merit, it's just that I can't find them taught in scripture. There are many places in the N.T. after the cross that talk about forgiveness in Christ. How is one to know whether that is judicial/legal forgiveness or parental/intimate forgiveness. Unfortunately the writers of the N.T., led by the Holy Spirit, don't use these 'theological' terms. So how are Christians who don't know Greek (like me) to know what the levels of forgiveness are? |

Well, I guess I'll answer my own question just to get it off the question queue. I only see forgiveness as forgiveness in the New Testament.
