Jcrichton Let me attempt to shed a little light on this topic if I may. First what is Hell? Hell is the English translation of the Greek word Hades. Hades by Jewish tradition was the holding place for the dead awaiting resurrection. Where this understanding came from we don’t know but it is all through ancient Jewish literature, so most feel it was something revealed to the patriarchs (Adam, Abraham, Moses etc.) In any case Jesus used this familiar teaching in his parable in Luke 16:9-31. In this parable and in the understanding of the Jews of this time Hades is divided into two sections one hot and dry a place for the unrighteous and paradise or Abraham’s bosom for those righteous that died depending on the coming Messiah for their salvation. Jesus upon the cross told the thief today you will be in paradise with me and he was upon his death the thief trusting in Christ went to Abraham’s bosom where Jesus was preaching the “Good News”. Ephesians 4:8 teaches us the Jesus then lead the righteous dead who were in captivity to death to Heaven to spend eternity with Christ. Paul tells us that today when we died we go directly to heaven 2 Cor 5:6-8 to be with Jesus. However the unrighteous continue to go to Hades the hot dry side awaiting their final judgement and sentence to the Lake of Fire Rev 20:15 You asked, “is Satan in hell now? (Revelation 20:7-10)” No! this is a misnomer Satan is not in hell or Hades and is not the ruler of hell. Satan doesn’t want anything to do with hell. Satan is upon this earth roaming seeking whom he can devour. Satan’s end is the Lake of Fire Rev 20:7-10 as you had noted. You asked “Where did Jesus go at His death?” He went to Abraham’s Bosom (paradise) to lead all those that dwelt there to heaven to be with Him. Why would God abandon Jesus? (Mt 27:46) God didn’t Jesus was repeating the first verse of Psalm 22 which the prophet wrote which depicts exactly the crucifixion and what Jesus was experiencing. Jesus was once more reaching out to the Jews who all knew this verse as a proclamation that he was in fact the one prophets wrote about. You asked, “Where are the imprisoned spirits of those who died before Jesus? (1 Peter 3:18-22)” As stated above in Hades which is translated Hell. “What is the world below that Paul speaks so knowingly about and what is his purpose in this play of ascention and descension? (Romans 10:6-7) Let let MacArthur answer this “His point is that the righteousness of faith does not require some impossible odyssey through the universe to find Christ. MacArthur, J. J. (1997, c1997). The MacArthur Study Bible (electronic ed.) (Ro 10:6). Nashville: Word Pub. Yes Jesus is God and His ways are not our ways. But we can be assured it faithful and true and He said he was going to return for us. Praise the Lord. EdB |

So Jesus parable about Lazarus (not Mary's and Martha's brother) should be taken in a literal sense that there is a visual connection between heaven and hell and that Abraham (the father of faith) is there receiving those who die in the faith? And when Jesus talks about the lakes of fire (hell) he is only reflecting on the Jewish folklore and appealing to their fear? And when Martha mentioned that she knew that her brother, Lazarus, would be raised on the last day, Jesus did not bother to correct her misinterpretation of "when" we'll be resurrected? And when Paul talks about those who died in the Lord will be raised first, he just means the ones who just died during that day of our Lord's Second Coming? I can't cite a refernce point--except from my own personal Bible studies. God Bless! |

Whoa!!!!! That is not what I said at all! I said there is a place called Hell or Hades. It is described as having two sides one a hot dry place the abode of the unrighteous and the other side called Abraham's bosom or paradise the abode of the righteous that died before Christ. That side is now empty since Jesus emptied it and took the rigtheous to heaven with him. The lake of fire as seen in Rev 20 and 21 is very real and is anything but folklore. It will be the place where Satan and the unrighteous dead will be tormented forever. When Paul or Jesus talks about resurrection they are talking about the time when the dead bodies will reunited with their spirits, a time when we will receive or immortal or perfected bodies. Right now the spirit is what resides either heaven with Jesus or in Hades awaiting judgement. What you citing may be your own study but it is a real close copy of what Jehovah Witnesses teach. EdB |
