The civil laws are those laws concerning Israel's state as a theocracy. The purpose of these laws was to provide a civil structure to the nation of Israel, whose King and Lawgiver was the Lord God Himself. The laws falling under this category have to do with such things as: laws concerning precise punishments, slave laws, food laws, laws to destroy the surrounding pagan nations, laws concerning the Cities of Refuge for manslayers, etc. The ceremonial laws are those laws concerning Israel's public worship of God. Their purpose was to provide Israel with the means to worship God according to His command. Like the civil law, these laws effectively acted as a "wall of partition" between the Jew and all other surrounding nations by keeping the Jews from the pagan religious practices of those surrounding them. The laws falling under this category have to do with such things as: appointed feasts, fasts, sacrifices, temple worship, etc The moral laws are those laws commanding individuals to love God with all their heart and their neighbor as themselves. Their purpose is to reveal the holy nature and will of God, to state man's duty to His God and to his fellow man, and to teach mankind the true nature of love. Though the individual laws will sometimes overlap into two or more categories, there is enough of a distinction among the three divisions to recognize the individual elements of each command. Thank you for responding. I asked a poor question. It should have been: Where is the _Biblical_ definition of what constitutes the Moral, Ceremonial, and Civil Law? Where in Scripture can I go to see that the Law was viewed by prophet or apostle as divided into multiple types or sections. Steve |
