1 | Why is marijuana use prohibited? | Heb 13:17 | jini | 68121
Pris- To be honest with you, there is no place in the Bible that prohibits the use of cannabis. We are warned against drunkenness, but to drink in moderation is not prohibited. In fact, many would say, as a seed bearing plant, cannabis was created on the third day and given to man for use on the sixth. Unfortunately, in reference to cannabis or marijuana as you refer to it here, the church is filled with apathy and ignorance, quoting scripture that simply does not apply in support of ideology that can not be justified biblically. While it is true that we are told to obey our leaders, it is also said in Isaiah "Woe to those who make unjust laws and issue oppressive decrees". Christians do not realize that we bear responsiblity for these laws being in existence and share in those woes. They do not see that making laws that criminalize something that God does not condemn is actually plotting harm against our neighbor, which we are explicitly told not to do. I confess, I have no clue as to how the body of Christ has been deceived into getting on the war on drugs bandwagon. On every other issue we have viewed government information and motivation with a critical eye. Not this one. Jesus told us to visit people in prison, not to put them there. Paul told us that the rules of "hold not, taste not and touch not" were destined to perish with use because they were based on human teachings and only had the appearance of wisdom. Yet we have charged on, not even bothering to see if our position is scripturally valid or is something we can say we are doing in the name of Jesus. There are a number of denominations that are recognizing that the laws that prohibit and criminalize cannabis use and other illicit substances, really does cause more harm than good. And this is only by earthly accounts. The active and unanimous Christian support of these laws have have caused more eternal harm than can be believed. love and peace, -jini |

2 | Why is marijuana use prohibited? | Heb 13:17 | Morant61 | 68140
Greetings Jini! I've already seen that several people have responded quite well with Scripture to the position you have taken. So, I will not add to their comments from Scripture, but I would like to speak from my own experiences. My wife and I have been through a living hell over the last four years. Our daughter has been a chronic runaway since she was 14 years old, and has been mixed up with illegal drugs. She started with pot, and now she has moved up to crack cocaine. Let me tell you what drugs do to a person: 1) She has dropped out of school. 2) She has had very little contact with her family in four years. 3) She is in a relationship with an older man who beats her. 4) She was using drugs the day our first grandbaby was born. 5) She has lost custody of her baby. 6) My wife and I are now the legal guardians of her baby. 7) She has been gone for the last two weeks and hasn't even been around to see her 1 1/2 month baby. I'm trying very hard to be polite, but let me state this as strongly as possible - Drugs destroy peoples lives. There is a reason why they are illegal. They are not fun! They are not harmless! I've heard all of the justifications and excuses, but the reality is that drugs destroy people. And, it's not just my daughter. I have seen countless examples over the years. I know that I will always stand opposed to any position which tries to legalize drugs, or cover up the destructive effects of them. So, for everyone reading this thread, please don't buy into the argument that drugs are harmless and misunderstood! :-( Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Blessings, Tim - I'll be praying for your daughter and you and your wife. Don't ever let anyone buy into the argument that pot doesn't lead to other drugs, either. I know. If you are around people that use pot, you eventually will come into contact with the other stuff. It isn't hurting them (yeah, right) so it is OK for me. Etc. Etc. Just keeps getting deeper and deeper. My heart goes out to you, and to anyone that has to deal with the problem. Debbie |
