1 | In Jesus' name...except baptism? | Col 3:17 | charis | 929 | ||
"...do all in the name of the Lord Jesus..." COL 3:17 Except water baptism? I ask this question seriously. I am not Jesus Only. But it seems to me that this issue is very emotional. I asked before and got the patent answer, "The Lord Himself said..." I have heard others base their belief upon tradition. Admittedly, even some early church fathers baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost (Spirit). I also heard that the name of Jesus is an abbreviation of a 'fuller formula.' Fine. But that does not answer why we use one scripture to supercede many other scriptures. If we are to baptize according to the 'fuller formula,' should we not then do all things in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit? How is this reconciled with the numerous actions of the apostles in the name of Jesus, and the commands to use His name? Were our predecessors disobedient to the command of the Lord? Perhaps they were running out of time, and used the abbreviation? My friends and colleagues, I am not trying to be irreverent. These are valid questions. Whenever we study the Bible, we give weight to such arguments when discussing other topics. Please, answer from the Bible, trying not to be led by tradition or the commentary of others. My intent is unity, not division. I believe in the power of the name of the Lord Jesus. On a side note, please notice that it is not only the 'formula' that is an area of division concerning water baptism. Method, age, place, baptizer, etc. are all subject to 'differing views.' (i.e. division) I look forward to some good answers. (p.s. please don't SHOUT) In Christ Jesus |

Mat 28:19 is a very good scripture for Jesus only baptism. Take note that the scripture asks for a "name" singular, and not a title as "father or son", it asks for only one name. I will give you brief scriptures about the "name". Jesus said "I am come in my Fathers name" He also said "the comforter which is the Holy Ghost will come in My name" and last but not least is the fact that the Son is Jesus, you don't need any scriptures for that, right! So we find the "name asked for in Mat. 28 is the name Jesus. The bible does not contradict itself and this is very simple, no one EVER was baptized in anything other than in Jesus name and those that were baptized in Acts in "John’s baptism" were rebaptised in the name of the Lord so the method is very important. |

The likelihood of your persuading anyone who studys the Bible is highly unlikely. The evidence points to salvation by grace through faith. In other words...Nothing we can do (including being baptized whether in Jesus name, or in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost) saves anyone! Did circumcision save the Jews? No! Rom 2:29 But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God. If, indeed, you have trusted in Christ as your only hope, then you would understand that any works of your own are an attempt to add something to what He has already accomplished. When He said "it is finished", He meant it! The works that are pleasing to God are not those which are an effort to save ourselves. They are the works that God has foreordained, and the result of our being one in Him. Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. John |

Hi John, But is does say we are "to be born again" We must die first then be buried and then rise again and this is done in Baptism. Repentance is the Death Put under the water is the burial Coming out of the water is the resurrection It also says if a man is not born of the water and of the Spirit he shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. I am not trying to change anyones mind, I am only trying to get people to think things over. I like these boards as it gives me things to think over. One thing that I don't like is when it becomes a competition among Christians as to who is right, our common goal should be that we all make it to heaven and not this "i am right and going to heaven and you are wrong and your not" attitude some have. I hope I am wrong about what I think and that ALL who just "believe" and nothing else, go to heaven. BUT my sutudies lead me to believe Baptism is essential for salvation. I appreciated your answer and saw no condemnation in it at all towards me so my comments are not at all directed towards you. One more thing, I agree we are saved by grace through faith and it says not by works lest we boast. It is saying we can't work our way into heaven as was the reason for the law, to show people they could not "work" their way into heaven or should I say "be good enough to have no sin" Baptism is not a work just like repentance is not a work but I think you will agree repentance is essential for salvation. If you are faith only for salvation then repentance can not be needed as it would fall under "works" or should I say some "act" in order to be saved. |

Yes yy..., We must be born again, but we are not born again by anything which we do...we are born again by the will of God! John 1:12,13 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. Sorry...I must stop for now. Time to earn my daily bread. John |
