1 | Peace a good deciding factor? | Col 3:15 | David Yew | 149778
Hi Doc, What I am saying is that many of my friends are claiming this verse and they claimed that it is feelings of peace. I contended that it is not to be as feelings can be deciving. Thus, as from my query, I would like to know what is peace of God? And is it a good indicator that God is pleased with our decision? David Love - An intelligent willingness to do what is best for the other person. |

Dear Brother David, I believe that your concern is well founded. In English words like love, peace, joy, hope, etc. are words of emotion. Scripture seems to have other things in mind! I liked your definition of love. As we see in the Scripture, whenever God loves, He does something! It isn't just butterflies in the tummy! :-) That written, as whole beings, there is an emotional aspect to our lives. We are not to be led by emotion, but rather by truth. However, often truth elicits an emotional response. Hopefully, however, the consequence is obedience! "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you." (John 14:27a) Other things can be drawn from this passage. However, with the question at hand consider this: Christ was speaking of His soon departure. He is commanding the disciples to be obedient to His Word. He has assured them of the coming of the Holy Spirit, who will instruct them. He tells them clearly that He has given them peace. However, He says it is a kind of peace that is completely alien to the world. Now, the world experiences two kinds of peace: (1) the cessation of warfare and (2) periods of inner tranquil. I think the latter kind is the "feeling kind." On the other hand, Christ goes on to say in the same verse, "Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27b) So, certainly there is an emotional component to this peace. But I think it is much more than that. I am persuaded that there is a calmness associated with it. There also is an intellectual component. It has to do with truth (2 John 1:3). However, there is also a spiritual component. Before we were saved, we were at war with God. In fact, Scripture says that we were God haters. But, through the act of God by the shed blood of Christ, we have been brought into an incredible new relationship with God in which the waring has ceased. His justice is satisfied. His love is manifested. His glory increased. We are justified, and therefore have peace with God (Romans 5;1). Now, I don't know about everyone else -- but if I'm at peace with God, and I have both external and internal evidence of this fact, there isn't much else to fret about! Anyway... those are my two mites. :-) In Him, Doc PS I like your definition. Might I expand it a bit for our own purposes? Love - An intelligent willingness to do what is best for the other person, in the light of the Word of God and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, possibly at my own loss Note that only a Christian can exhibit this kind of love! Do you think we might be more willing to testify about our Lord if we loved Him more and loved others more? (Romans 9:1-5) |

3 | Peace a good deciding factor? | Col 3:15 | David Yew | 149804
Hi Doc, Thank you for giving more insights into the word peace. Yes, I do agree now that peace has an emotional component. I think you are right when you say that the peace given is a response, ie: We come to have peace because in our mind we want to act in obedience to God's word. And thus, in making peace with God, God grants us peace - emotional and mental, sense of clamness as you have said. Thus, if I could digress from this verse, we may consider this premise A) When we act in accordance with God's will. B) We will have peace. C) Peace may not mean that all that is to be done will always smooth-flowing / trouble-free. D) God grant the peace so that we know we have acted correctly and to continue in it. I am sorry if I seem to repeat whatever you have shared. I am glad that you like the definition. I learn that from Rev Alan Catchpoole who taught us in Singapore Youth For Christ. Your sharing is similar to his teaching too! The definition convicted me much and is concise for my understanding, in fact as you rightly expanded, that is Love as described in 1 Jn 3:16. (Seems to be divine that 3:16(s) reference have much to say about love, and particularly 1 Jn 3:16 and Jn 3:16). Thank you for your sharing! God Bless! Dear David, Do these kinds of problems arise in languages like Manderin, Malay, or Tamil? I imagine so because these things are "not as the world knows." English seems to have a penchant for using the same word to mean many different things -- sometimes even opposite things! One must also keep in mind that the peace of God supercedes the turmoil that may be surrounding us. My wife and I remind one another to, "Keep your eyes on the prize!" What a blessing that we have a hope and a peace that is more certain than what we experience "more directly." In Him, Doc PS Don't apologize for rephrasing. Rewording something can be helpful for everyone! |

Hi Doc, You are right! There are problems among all these languages (I can't justify for Tamil, but it is so for Malay, Mandarin and its dialects and Japanese). But each has its beauty and culture that God has placed its significance. Perhaps that's why some of us used dynamic equivalence paraphrases for better understanding of the text. As for me, I am self-learning Greek and desire to feel the sense of the words and the letters of NT. That I may be a good workman rightly dividing the word of truth and be a better testimony to everyone. Maybe next time I will pickup Hebrew too! :p Yup! As 3:15 continues, in living in peace among men, God grants peace so that we may continue in living and to be thankful. Thank you for your words of encouragement! I just long to have more people around me who will love God's word and to be a swordsman welding the sword! God Bless! God bless you, David, for your diligence! There is another member here who knows Greek. It has proven invaluable. That is Brother Tim Moran (morant61). I'm sure he can help you in your study from time to time. In Him, Doc |
