1 | In what way is Christ God's mystery? | Col 2:2 | EdB | 114854
Leonard I'm sorry after I posted my first response I noticed you did have a particular verse in mind. Col 2:2. In my first answer you will see Unger lists this mystery as point 6. “God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself” (Col. 2:2, 9; 1 Cor. 2:7). This involves Christ as the fullness of the Godhead in bodily form. The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia lists it as, "In a wide sense it is the whole gospel, God's world-embracing purpose of redemption through Christ (e.g. Romans 16:25; Ephes. 6:19; Col. 2:2; 1 Tim. 3:9)" For a tie breaker I went to John MacArthur which agrees with Unger. mystery. Leaving out the phrase between “God” and “Christ” (see marginal note), which was probably not in the original text, changes nothing. The point is that the mystery Paul referred to here is that the Messiah Christ is God incarnate Himself (cf. 1 Tim. 3:16). MacArthur, J. J. (1997, c1997). The MacArthur Study Bible (electronic ed.) (Col 2:2). Nashville: Word Pub. I hope this helps EdB |

2 | The MacArthur study Bible | Col 2:2 | leonore | 114858
Thank you, it does. I've read quite a few posts that mention The MacArthur Study Bible. One of them mentioned that it was from a certain denomination, do you know what they were talking about? By the answers I have read it seems like a very good study aid. thanks again! |

3 | The MacArthur study Bible | Col 2:2 | tortoise | 114871
Hi leonore, Yes, MacArthur, who is still living, has written a study Bible. And he definitely has a certain denominationaly perspective, which is Reformed and it is all very complicated. The best thing I have found is to ask the indwelling Holy Spirit to teach you the meaning of the passage you are studying. John 16:13 says, "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come." God bless, tortoise |
