1 | filled and upon mean the same thing | John 7:39 | Ray | 113129
Hi Itiswritten, Thank you for your post and I agree with you entirely. Of course I, however, would choose a version that capitalizes so that 1 John 4:4 would be even more clear. 1 John 4:4b, "...because greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world." You may be thinking that I do not see that God indwells us, but really I do. "Christ in me, the hope of glory" and having the Spirit of God in me are what determine my belonging to Him. God also comes UPON persons for special circumstance for service, also. But these are things that God does. The Holy Spirit falls on us, comes upon us, and the Spirit or the Spirit of God descended upon Jesus for His ministry. However, being FILLED with the Holy Spirit (holy spirit to my mind), is something that we are supposed to do. Also, the Scripture says that He gives the Spirit (spirit to my mind) without measure. My body could not contain all of God; no way. But I can fill my mind with spiritual things and have much more available to me for later study. We can be filled with a spirit of wisdom or a spirit of love. But to be filled with the Spirit; no way. That is my understanding and why I listed the references for being filled with the holy spirit. 2 | filled and upon mean the same thing | John 7:39 | Morant61 | 113143
Greetings Ray! Just a quick note my friend! If you are speaking of Eph. 5:18, 'filled' is a passive verb. Therefore, it is not something that 'we' do. Rather, it is something done to us. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

3 | filled and upon mean the same thing | John 7:39 | Ray | 113163
Hi Tim, Thank you for that information. My question would now be then, "Are we to be passively controlled by the Holy Spirit?" 1) Commentators like to change "filled with" to "controlled by". 2) I like the idea that you have expresssed that it is not something that initiated from us. But we are being told to imbibe fully, even get drunk with something or Someone. It makes more sense to me to get drunk on a spirit than a Spirit. 3) MacArthur's Study notes tell us for this verse that "He is rather giving a command for believers to live continually under the influence of the Spirit by letting the Word [sic] control them (see note on Col. 3:16)..." MacArthur's note on Col. 3:16. 3:16 word of Christ. This is Scripture, the Holy Spirit inspired Scripture, the word [sic] of revelation He brought into the world. dwell in you richly. See notes on Eph. 5:18. "Dwell" means "to live in" or "to be at home," and "richly" may be more fully rendered "abundantly or extravagantly rich." Scripture should permeate every aspect of the believer's life and control every thought, word, and deed (cf. Ps. 119:11; Matt. 13:9; Phil. 2:16; 2 Tim. 2:15). This concept is parallel to being filled with the Spirit [sic] in Eph. 5:18 since the results of each are the same. In Eph. 5:18, the power and motivation for all the effects is the filling of the Holy Spirit [sic]; here it is the word [sic] richly dwelling. Those two realities are really one. The Holy Spirit fills the life controlled by His Word [sic]. This emphasizes that the filling of the Spirit is not some ecstatic or emotional experience, but a steady controlling of the life by obedience to the truth of God's Word [sic]." 4) I agree with MacArthur, but find fault with his inconsistency in/by capitalization of the word of God, the Scriptures. My belief is that the Holy Spirit uses the Scriptures to fill us with His words. If the realities are really one, as MacArthur states, then I would say that we are filled with the holy spirit and the word of Christ dwells in us richly, without measure. From the heart, Ray |

5 | Filled with His words? | John 7:39 | Batunde | 150839
The major ingredients of a service are exhaltation/preaching, prayer, singing songs in psalms and bible songs.I Cor. 14:23 and Eph. 5:19 The mode of worship must be in the spirit. Every service should be directed to worshiping Him, our everlasting father. God is a spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth, God demands in John 4:24. All other things introduced into worship are at best worldly and at the worst idolatory and satanic. The church should stop all these gimmicks which is to appeal to membership drive. God is able to draw men unto himself. All the church need to do is to lift God up in quality worship through prayer and spririt filled songs. God is able to save by his Spririt. God knows the heart.
6 | Filled with His words? | John 7:39 | Ray | 150846
Hi Batunde, Welcome to the forum. In reading your nine posts so far, I found a great variance in how you expressed things. I found them to vary as in how you spoke of "his Spirit" and "His Spirit". In how you saw James 1:22 as speaking about the Word rather than the word; just as examples. Therefore, I do not think that you are the one who can answer my question about the variances I see in McArthur's notes. I thought that your posts were good, so don't take my desire for another answerer personally. I would just desire from you a more consistent capitalization so that I could know if we were of a kindred spirit or not. I think that we are. From the heart, Ray |

Dear Ray, Sorry, I had already posted my note before I realised that your question was based on another thing entirely. I indeed goofed. I thought your question was on ingredients of service which I responded to. I do not, however, see how the other eight posts have relevance in this case as they were responses to different questions. God bless you. Yours in Him, Batunde |
