1 | Does anyone really *do* this? | Luke 14:12 | Hank | 13450
What an excellent question on a piece of Scripture, Nolan, for a springboard to discussion and reflection, and I must say that in all my years I've seen it happen very rarely, except generally at Thanksgiving and Christmas -- and then usually sponsored under the aegis of certain churches and secular charitable organizations who serve a dinner to the indigent. Now and then one hears of a family who invites some needy person over for a meal on special occasions. But the rule in my social circle is to invite friends, relatives or "rich neighbors" for a party or dinner, who will likely return the favor. That's just the opposite, of course, of what is being taught in this passage of Scripture..... We are most of us I should think, inclined to stay well within our "comfort zone" socially, culturally, and economically. We are more at ease among our peer group who think much along the same lines politically and spiritually as we do, among those with whom we have much in common. This is hardly the example that Jesus set, and He never said that a "comfort zone" should be our criterion for our walk with Him. --Hank
2 | Does anyone really *do* this? | Luke 14:12 | Makarios | 13458
Why thank you, Hank! You know that if you lived anywhere in close proximity to me, that you and your family would be invited over to my house to eat and have dinner anytime! :) I agree: we can only meet the needs of those who are needy when we can only gather up enough courage (or guilt) to form a church committee to do so! What a poor example and what a far cry from what we are commanded to do by our Savior! I live in probably the nicest house on the whole block. I own two cars, am financially stable and I have a job that I can be very thankful for! And yet I live right next to some people who are barely making it, struggling to pay their rent. The property that I live on has been in my family's name and possession for fifty years, and I am blessed in every way! Is there any reason why I keep inviting people over who are in the same social status as I am and neglect to have my poorer neighbors over? I see that I need to break a certain "unseen" barrier that exists and begin to reach out to those who have not been as blessed with the material things that I have.. In that way, I can use some of my "earthly" treasure to obtain that which is "heavenly!" You are absolutely right! I am steeped in a "comfort zone" that I am so unwilling to break! My thoughts go to the cross and how Jesus gave up His "comfort zone" at His Father's right hand and went to do what He did for us on the cross.. --Nolan |

3 | Does anyone really *do* this? | Luke 14:12 | Brian.g | 13465
Nolan and Hank You both profess to be men of God and followers of Jesus, and yet you sit there and say, yes I should eat with the poor and someday I may do it. Have you learned nothing from all of your quotations from the Bible. Have you not heard the advise you give to others. 16 Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?" 17 "Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments." 18 "Which ones?" the man inquired. Jesus replied, "Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself." 20 "All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?" 21 Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." 22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. 23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." Luke 16 13 "No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money." Matthew 23: 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness Romans 21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? 23 You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? |
