1 | What the scripture say about morality? | Ps 119:1 | ChristLifer2001 | 46592 | ||
Makarios, I found your statement, "One cannot be motivated to sin from reading the Bible," to be interesting. While I understand what you are saying, have you considered Paul's statements about the Law (contained in the Bible) in Romans? There he writes in Rom 7:4: "For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, WHICH WERE AROUSED BY THE LAW, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death." He writes in verse 8: "But sin, taking oportunity through the commandment (the Law), PRODUCED IN ME coveting of every kind..." And in verse 10: "And this commandment (the Law) which (I thought) was to result in life, proved to result in death for me." The Law is indeed holy, righteous, and good, but it's effect in us is to stir up sin. It is not the Law that is the problem. It is indwelling sin that uses the Law to cause us to sin. Greetings ChristLifer2001! When I read the following: "It is not the Law that is the problem. It is indwelling sin that uses the Law to cause us to sin", I knew right then that you completely understood where I was coming from when I wrote, "One cannot be motivated to sin from reading the Bible." Yes, I did consider Romans before I went so far as to say that a person cannot be motivated to sin from reading the Bible. The underlying question is: what exactly initiates the motivation to sin, and the 'initiator' of sin is most certainly not the Word of God, since it is pure and holy. You see, "the words of the LORD are pure words; as silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times." (Psalm 12:6) There is nothing within the Word of God itself that causes us to sin, it is our own sinful nature and desires within us that causes us to sin. Studying or dwelling upon the Word of God does not in itself produce or result in a desire to sin against God. However, the very "Presence" of the Law, or the Word of God, reveals our sin, and in that way, we are stimulated to sin, because man naturally desires whatever is forbidden (Romans 7:13). But just as Paul says in Romans 7:12, the Law is holy, and the Word of God is holy. In fact, the Word of God is holy and righteous and good. Therefore, by itself, the Word of God itself does not motivate a man to sin. That is what I meant, and you have correctly perceived that! :-) I am thankful that this has given us an excellent study of the sinful nature and what the reaction of the sinful nature is to the 'pure words of the LORD.' Blessings to you, Makarios |
