Bible Question:
Hello all; I hope this question is not redundent; As it pertains to something said here, and maybe it was questioned, if it was, I apologize. But..... I have heard it stated; that the virgin birth accrued so that Jesus would be born "without" a "sin" nature. If this is so: How could He have been tempted? And if not; then..... Why was it a Virgin birth? God bless stj |
Bible Answer: Hi, stj... The virgin birth is important doctrinally for three broad reasons: A. Ultimately, our salvation has its source in the Lord. God promised the destruction of the serpent through the Messiah in the protoevangelium (Genesis 3:15). The virgin birth reminds us that salvation is matter of God's power alone, not human effort. B. The virgin birth clearly unites humanity and deity in Jesus. Consider the other ways in which the Messiah might have conceivably come into the world. What a testimony to who He was! C. Finally, the virgin birth allows for Jesus to have been born fully human, without inheriting Adam's sinful nature. Every descendant of Adam inherits his guilt (this is called imputation). Since Jesus did not have a human father, Christ was not of the seed of Adam. (cf Luke 1:35) This was an important aspect of His moral perfection -- both in action and in nature. Thus, the Lamb was the perfect sacrifice for sin. Allowing for the other aspect of imputation: the imputation of our sin to Christ and the imputation of His righteousness to us. In Him, Doc |
