Subject: WordFocus: "tempted" |
Bible Note: WordFocus: "tempted" *************************** (Gk. peirazo) (4:1; Luke 4:2; Mark 1:13; Heb. 4:15) Strong's #3985: The word means "to try" or "to make proof of," and when ascribed to God in His dealings with people, it means no more than this (see Gen. 22:1). But for the most part in Scripture, the word is used in a negative sense, and means to entice, solicit, or provoke to sin. Hence the name given to the wicked one in this passage is "the tempter" (4:3). Accordingly "to be tempted" here is to be understood both ways. The Spirit conducted Jesus into the wilderness to try His faith; but the agent in this trial was the wicked one, whose object was to seduce Jesus away from His allegiance to God. This was temptation in the bad sense of the term. Yet Jesus did not give in to temptation; He passed the test (see 2 Cor. 5:21; Heb. 7:26).
