Bible Question: I HAVE BEEN ATTENDING FAITH BAPTIST CHRUCH AND WAS THINKING ABOUT CHANGING MY LETTER, WHEN I NOTICED THERE WASN'T EVER AN INVITATION AT THE END OF THE SERVICES. WE ASKED AND IT WAS EXPLAINED TO US WE WOULD HAVE TO BE REVIEWED BY A GROUP OF 3 ELDERS AND THEY DECIDE IF WE ARE TRULY SAVED BEFORE WE COULD JOIN. MY QUESTION IS: I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS PRACTICE IN A BAPTIST CHURCH DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INSIGHT ON THIS, OR IS THIS SOMETHING I NEED TO LET ALONE. THANK SANDRA |
Bible Answer: I am not sure from your question exactly what the process is. I think it is a bit hasty to say this is legalism. The local church must protect itself by allowing only born-again Christians to join. Imagine the confusion that would result if unbelievers were allowed to teach Sunday School or fill the pulpit. I am on the board at our church and prospective members are required to meet with the board and give their testimony. There is no way we can look at the heart, but we do ask questions and try to determine if the individual is truly saved. |
