Bible Note: POPE AND AUTHORITY Christ gave Pope Peter alone the "keys of the kingdom" (Matt. 16:19) and promised that Peters decisions would be binding in heaven. He also gave similar power to the other apostles (Catholic Bishops) (Matt. 18:18), but only Pope Peter was given the keys, symbols of his authority to rule the Church on earth in Jesus’ absence. In Matthew 16:19 Jesus is referring to Isaiah 22:22 I will place the key of the House of David on his shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut, when he shuts, no one shall open. Rev. 3:7 : "To the angel of the church in Philadelphia, write this: "The holy one, the true, who holds the key of David, who opens and no one shall close, who closes and no one shall open, …” His church is a living church.
