Subject: Reading Harry Potter |
Bible Note: Greetings Hank! I never said that there wasn't anything I wouldn't read! ;-) Personally, I would draw my line at pornography! :-) But, the question is more one of degree than type. What I mean is, we read about adultery in the Bible - it just doesn't give us a blow by blow account! ;-) Having been involved in these discussions before (and gotten no where), I will just leave my comments at this: There is a world of difference between drawing a personal line and stating that the "Bible says...". The Bible never mentions SciFiction or fantasy books. So, we will simply have to apply our good sense and prayerfully consider what we read. There are things that I will not read. But, that is a personal decision, not a Biblical mandate. I have read the Harry Potter books, and I have allowed my kids to read them. But, we sat down and discussed 'magic' and what the Bible has to say about it first. I am fully comfortable with my decision. If I weren't, I wouldn't have read them. :-) Where I would draw the line with 'magic' is similar to how I would draw the line between the mention of adultery and the vulgar description of the actual acts. I would not let my kids read a book advocating actually becoming a witch in the real world. The difference to me is that fantasy books are not 'real'. Take Star Wars for example! There is no 'force'. The entire world is simply made up for entertainment purposes. If the book were actually trying to claim that there is a 'force' that can be used for either good or evil, then I would be opposed to it. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
