Bible Question:
Hello, my name is Carter. My wife and I have been discussing this question for about a month. If anyone can shed some light it would be great. (I have done several searches but because I don’t know how exactly to word it they have all been to no avail) My wife and I have both been taught all of our lives that: When you sin and that sin goes unconfessed (sp?) it forms a barrier that hinders the communication with God. Can this position be backed up with chapter and verse? So far I have found: 1 Peter 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered. This seams to obviously say that our prayers can be hindered. John 9:31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. This clause might say that if you don’t do his will He (God) doesn’t hear you. Please know that I am not trying to put meanings to the Bible that do not belong or even make assumptions that should not be. Our individual and family prayer time is very important to us. We are just looking to understand better. If anyone can give some references to further back this up it would be appreciated. Thank you, Carter |
Bible Answer: Hi Carter, The two verses you already found are good and I would add to them Ps. 66:18 and Is. 59:1-2. All four passages give us the general idea that sin hinders prayer. And it is easy to see why--when we approach God with unconfessed sin in our lives, we are not, in a sense, on good speaking terms with the Lord. Anything we want to talk to Him about is really less important to Him than our needed cleansing, which He lets us know is of primary importance by, for example, letting us feel like our prayer is getting no higher than the ceiling. Sin affects fellowship, which may be another word for "good speaking terms." When fellowship is restored by confession and cleansing (1 John 1:9), prayer is sweet communion with the Lord. Phil |
