Bible Question: Is marriage necessary for a man and woman to be committed to their relationship? |
Bible Answer: Marriage is the sign of the committment. It is a Covenant oath by which a man and a woman committ their entire selves to one another, just as God committs Himself to us and we committ ourselves to Him. Interestingly, even in civil law a husband and wife in many ways become a single corporate entity like a corporation. "One body" so to speak for legal purposes. Now you might ask what is the difference between a Covenant and a contract. The difference is tha same as the difference between committment for life, for better or worse and a transaction between a man and a prostitute, a simple contract involving an anchanges of goods (money) for services (sex). In some ways sexual a relationship without the covenant of marriage is on an even lower level that an exchange with a prostitute. At least in that case there is a clear understanding of what is being exchanged, what each party's obligation is and how long the relationship will last.
