Bible Question: I am wondering if anyone can give me the Greek word Jesus used in Jn. 19:30 where He said, "It is Finished." The one word means it is finished. I would also appreciate the correct pronounciation. Thanks and God Bless! |
Bible Answer: The Greek word is teleo and is pronounced tel-eh-o. It is usually translated as end, i.e. complete, execute, conclude. It comes from a root word telos and is pronounced tel-os. It means to set out for a definite point or goal. Therefore, the text means that the goal which Jesus Christ came for (to provide a substitutionary sacrifice for man to redeem him back to God) was complete as far as the earthly ministry was concerned. As you know from reading on further in the Word, He had not yet descended into hell and then up to the Father to be seated at His right hand. That portion was the spiritual. Upon His sitting at the right hand (place of honor) the complete work of the cross was finalized. |
