Bible Question:
What does the fire represent in Acts 2:2 It could be seen then and can it still be seen today. Thanks, Alcie |
Bible Answer: Hello alcie, I think you must be referring to Acts 2:3 instead of 2:2? Acts 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. Actually there was no fire, the Koine Greek word HOSEI, translated “as” sets up what is known as a figure of speech. This particular figure of speech is what known as a, simile and it easily to recognize in the English by the words like as or as compare two thing or thoughts for greater clarification. (Understanding Scripture at Face Value plain and simple) The fire that John the Baptist speaks of is actual fire. Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: John was speaking to a mixed group of believers and unbelievers and everyone that hears these words of John will receive one baptism or the other. The baptism of fire won’t be a very enjoyable event. Rev. 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. CDBJ |
