Subject: language Jesus speak |
Bible Note: Sir Pent I'm sorry I didn't mean to upset you in any way. You just made what to me sounded like an authoritative statement that Jesus spoke mostly in Hebrew and I was just wondering what that was based on. I had always been trained to understand Jesus spoke Aramaic, probably some Hebrew and maybe Greek. My understanding was Hebrew was not often used almost like Latin in Catholic Mass. The Hebrew Language became a second language after Alexander the Great and the Greek language became the language of the civilized world. Hebrew didn’t experience a rise in popularity until the nation of Israel was founded and a need for a common language was realized. It was an awesome project since many words were forgotten and new terms had to be invented. We know Jesus quoted from the Septuagint, which to me is exciting because we have very early manuscripts of it. Therefore if Jesus read from it and didn’t say by the way you guys translated this wrong or this is missing then to me at least I’m assured we have accurate copies of the Old Testment. EdB |
