Subject: language Jesus speak |
Bible Note: Defense of my answer............................................... Hello EdB, The King James Version of the Bible was written using words like "thee" and "thou" that have not been in common use for more than 100 years. However, although there are newer translations out there that are easier to read, some people still prefer the KJV. Similarly, I think we can assume that although there was a Greek translation available during Jesus time, that there were many people who prefered the old Hebrew texts. I think it is likely that the scriptures were still read in Hebrew at certain synagogues. And although the "common man" may have been more likely to be limited to understanding the Greek, the teachers of the law would definately be familiar with the older versions, just as many Bible scholars today study the original languages. Therefore, I think that it is a safe bet that Jesus would also have known the Hebrew language and be familiar with that version of the Old Testament writings. Finally, I would just like to say that it really doesn't matter very much what language Jesus spoke. We're all guessing, and the person who started this thread seems to have lost interest anyway. |
