Subject: Where did our souls come from? |
Bible Note: Greetings Dawveed! I just noticed on your profile that you are new to the Forum! Welcome my friend! Now, on to the verse! From your post, I gathered that you believe that God imparted something of Himself to man - a soul. However, Gen. 2:7 says that God breathed breath into his nostrils. The word "breath" is the Hebrew word 'nƒshamah.' It is used 24 times in the Old Testament. The simple concept "breath of life" seems to refer simply to air. Thus, Gen. 2:7 signifies a sort of creative CPR. God forms man from the dust of the earth and then animates, or gives life to him by breathing air into his lungs. The result is that man becomes a "living" soul. Notice that the verse never says that God imparted something of Himself to us. Further, this act is only done to Adam. Every other human being, other than Eve, is born and receives breath for the first time when they come from the womb (something I have personally witnessed five times). So, I would say that it is a stretch to say that Gen. 2:7 means that we partake of God's Spirit. What do you think? Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
