Bible Note: Greetings John! It doesn't happen often enough, so I wanted to agree with you! ;-) With all due respect to our friend Emmaus, the baptism account of Acts 16:33 is an historical narrative of the events that took place after Acts 16:31. The direct question was addressed in Acts 16:31. Paul was asked, 'What must I do to be saved?' Paul answered, '...Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.' Would we assume that if v. 33 said that later that night they all went down to the local 7-11 that going to the 7-11 was also meant to be part of Paul's answer in Acts 16:31? ;-) Context does not mean that every narrative event which occured at the time of or immediately following must also be included in the direct response given by Paul and Silas to the jailer's question. Would we say that the one being baptized must also wash the wounds of the baptizer in order to be saved, as the jailer did in v. 33? Must one also feed the baptizer as the jailer did in v. 34? Nothing in this passage says that baptism is necessary for salvation. It simply says that they were baptized. According to Paul, the only thing necessary for salvation was for them to believe (Acts 16:31). To go beyond the clear statement of Scripture, and add other requirements in is a dangerous and exegetically unsound practice. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
