NASB | Joshua 10:12 ¶ Then Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, "O sun, stand still at Gibeon, And O moon in the valley of Aijalon." |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Joshua 10:12 ¶ Then Joshua spoke to the LORD on the day when the LORD handed over the Amorites to the sons of Israel, and Joshua said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand still at Gibeon, And moon, in the Valley of Aijalon." |
Bible Question: How are we to interpret Joshua 10:12-14 when Joshua asks the Lord to make the sun 'stand still'? Did God prolong the day by some refraction of the sun's rays? I think that God stopped the earth's rotation on its axis. I also think it is interesting that the Amorites worshiped the sun and the moon as deities. Therefore, the TRUE God defeated them through their own 'deities'.. |
Bible Answer: Nolan: "sun stood still, And the moon stopped." Joshua 10:12 Then Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, "O sun, stand still at Gibeon, And O moon in the valley of Aijalon." Several explanations/interpretations for this incident in Josh 12 "needlessly question God's power as Creator. This is best accepted as an outright, monumental miracle. Joshua, moved by the Lord's will, commanded the sun to delay (Heb., 'be still, silent, leave off'). The earth actually stopped revolving or, more likely, the sun moved in the same way to keep perfect pace with the battlefield. The moon also ceased its orbiting. This permitted Joshua's troops time to finish the batttle with complete victory (v. 11)" (p. 316, MacArthur Study Bible, Word, 1997). --JVH0212 |
