Subject: What is a counted all joy in trials? |
Bible Note: Dear Momma, I might be mistaken, but I believe the word "it" refers to the phrase "encountering of various trials" (ESV) in the same verse (i.e., James 1:2). That appears to be how most orthodox commentators have interpreted it. Regardless, I think your observations which follow reflect a sound hermeneutic. Our hope (a confident expectation) rests in Him with whom we have to do. There is the ultimate reward of eternal life in His presence. You mentioned the crown of life from James 1:12. I think that Paul is talking about the same thing in 2 Corinthians 4:17. However, I think there are blessings for us in this lifetime. How about "the peaceable fruit of righteousness" per Hebrews 12:11? In that same chapter we are also assured that our afflictions are rooted in an expression of love for God's own (verse 6). If you want, drop me an email, and we will work together to build a good list with Bible references. We could then post it here to see if others could expand upon it. I think it would be a beneficial and educational exercise. In Him, Doc |
