Bible Note: Dear sonofmom, No, sting, son. (cf Proverbs 9:8) :-) One need not have great insight into any particular individual to be able to identify the error by their symptomatic vernacular. (Our mindset is always revealed in our words.) After all, some of us lived in and taught others these very things (Romans 1:32; 1 Corinthians 6:11). You see, we all need that "whole new mindset" (Romans 12:2; 1 John 2:15-17). This is pretty basic stuff, but a Biblical mindset has been neglected for so long in our churches, all we can do is reiterate those basics (Hebrews 5:12). If you found your dignity impugned or your respectability presumed upon, that simply reflects what is in your heart. By the way, you can actually use those sorts of feelings as an indicator of areas that need attention. Thomas Watson talked about this question of our affections when he asked, "How shall we know that we love the reproofs of the word? ... When we are thankful for a reproof: 'Let the righteous strike me; It shall be a kindness. And let him rebuke me; It shall be as excellent oil; Let my head not refuse it. For still my prayer is against the deeds of the wicked.' (Psalm 141:5). David was glad of a reproof. Suppose a man were in the mouth of a lion, and another should shoot the lion and save the man, would he not be thankful? So, when we are in the mouth of sin, as of a lion, and the minister by a reproof shoots this sin to death, shall we not be thankful? A gracious soul rejoices when the sharp lance of the Word has pierced his abscess. He wears a reproof like a jewel on his ear: 'Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold is a wise reprover to an obedient ear' (Proverbs 25:12)." I am gratified that you have found Scriptural answers to your question about our commemoration of our Lord Jesus Christ's atonement. In Him, Doc |
