AMPLIFIED 2015 | Hebrews 11:7 By faith [with confidence in God and His word] Noah, being warned by God about events not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his family. By this [act of obedience] he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness which comes by faith. [Gen 6:13-22] |

Bible Note: Dear Terrib, Note that I did not write anything about what Noah or Abraham knew or did not know. Indeed, I was not trying to "get into their heads" at all. The elect do not find merit in God's eyes due to anything they do, say, or think. Scripture is clear in affirming that the elect are beneficiaries of God's grace -- His unmerited favor (cf. Romans 11:5, 2 Timothy 1:9, 1 Peter 5:10, and elsewhere). So it was with Noah (Genesis 6:8) and so it was with Abraham (Nehemiah 9:7). So, the question -- a purely theological question -- is this: How are the elect who lived before the atonement of Christ saved? Christ declares, "It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me." (John 6:45) Referring to the prophecies of Isaiah 54:13, Jeremiah 31:34, and Micah 4:2, our Lord also says, "It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me." (John 6:45) Remember that Christ was the fulfillment, denouement, and perfection of everything in the Old Testament. "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil." (Matthew 5:17) But also remember that salvation can only be accomplished through the means that God has provided. "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." (Acts 4:12) Consequently, if anyone is saved by any means, it will be through Christ's atonement alone. Note that the sense of what I have said is also expressed in Hebrews 10 through 12. In Him, Doc PS My references to the "Lamb that was slain" come from Revelation 5:6, 12; 13:8. |
