Bible Question: Is this "consuming fire" one and the same as the fire of hell or the lake of fire? IMO, no. This is not referring to eternal damnation. I'd be interested in what others think, and why. |
Bible Answer: Hi BadDog, I agree with you that they are not the same fire. 1)The consuming fire is the glory of the Lord. Exodus 24:17, "And to the eyes of the sons of Israel the appearance of the glory of the **Lord was like a consuming fire on the mountain top." 2)The consuming fire shows that He is a jealous God. Deuteronomy 4:24, "For the **Lord your God is a jealous God." 3) The Lord goes before us as [like?] a consuming fire. One could almost picture a path burned before them, destroying anything in the way. Deuteronomy 9:3, "Know therefore today that it is the (Lord) your God who is crossing over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and **He will subdue them before you, so that you may drive them out and destroy them quickly, just as the Lord has spoken to you." 4) The Lord judges His people. He is a consuming fire. He will not accept the self-righteous attitude. Deuteronomy 9:5, "..but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the (Lord) your God is driving them out before you,...6 Know then, it is not because of your righteousness that the **Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stubborn people." 5) The Spirit of grace is the living God; a jealous God and a consuming fire. He will repay; He will judge His people. Hebrews 10:29, "How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the (Spirit) of grace? For we know Him who said, 'Vengeance is Mine, **I will repay,' And again, 'The Lord will judge His people.' It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God./" Hebrews 12:29, "for our God/ is a consuming fire." That's what I think and why. The parentheses and slash marks are mine for comparison. From the heart, Ray |
