Bible Question:
Why did the Translators of the NASB choose the word "adequate" instead of "complete" in 2Timothy 3:17? |
Bible Answer: 2 Tim 3:17 (The NET Bible): "that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work." . . . Translator's footnote. (3:17) This word (capable) is positioned for special emphasis; it carries the sense of "complete, competent, able to meet all demands." . . . For a general answer to the question, "Why did the Translators of the NASB choose the word they chose instead of a different word?", I recommend that you read "Principles of Interpretation", Foreword, the New American Standard Bible. I am not trying to be vague, it's just that I have no way of knowing why the Translators chose "adequate" in the above verse. Pointing you to the NASB's Principles of Interpretation is the best answer I can give, one that does not rely on speculation (a fancy word for "the guess method"). |
