Subject: Reading too much into C S Lewis ? |
Bible Note: Dear Makarios, Good comments on C. S. Every man should be judged in the context of their own period in history. I think you did a good job of discussing Lewis in the context of time and society in which he lived. You know, I am always puzzled that some Christians of the past tended to drink so heavily -- or, at least, heavily by my own standard. (Personally, I'm a pretty staunch tea-totaler. Indeed, if I had my way I'd see liquor disappear even sooner than tobacco, even though the latter is a horrible vice.) Part of the fruit of the Spirit is self-control. Liquor certainly doesn't seem to help in that direction at all! I've a deep and abiding respect for the Puritans, but they tended to drink pretty heavily. That's quite a contradiction in my thinking, especially considering how they were so thorougly disciplined. I guess at least part of the reason for these thoughts stem from the fact that I'm doing the thinking from the other side of the Temperance movement. There, again, it just doesn't pan out to judge men outside of their own historical context. Just some thoughts after reading your post. In Him, Doc |
