Bible Question: I want to know where in the bible it says the a preacher/biship is not to be divorced and does this include his wife. Suppose his wife dies and he remarries, can he marry a divorced woman and still remain a preacher? |
Bible Answer: Jesus said that no one should divorce excpet on the grounds of adultery or fornication (Matthew 5:32; Matthew 19:3-8.) This would obviously include the bishop, or overseer of the congregation. If the overseer were to divorce his wife on grounds other than fornication, then he would be scripturally disqualified to serve. 1 Timothy 3:2 is showing that the person must be a husband of one wife. That is he cannot have more than one wife. This does not disqualify someone that is single. Paul himself recommened a single life. (1 Corinthians 7:25-27). If a man were to divorce his wife on grounds that were not Biblical in God's eyes there was no legal divorceing and thus if he remarries and she remains single, he would also not qualify to serve in the capicity as an overseer. This Scripture also shows the wrongness of not letting an overseer or bishop of the congregation marry as organizations have stipulated. These teachings must have come from demons as is stated at 1 Tim 4:1-3. |
