Bible Note: Norm, I understand HOW you could make the mistake of assuming that 1 Chron 24:10 meant the priest served one month each. You are not the first one to wrongly conclude such. I have, in years gone by, “read” about HOW your calculations were concluded. Let’s try the Biblical approach again, shall we? This time lets do it according to the REAL time for the “priests’ service”. The reference you provided is specifically for the chief fathers’ and captains’ courses, NOT priests. We need to use the orders and courses of the priests and Levites in their ministrations. Josephus Bk 7 Chapter 14:7 (365) “… and he ordained that one course should minister to God eight days, from Sabbath to Sabbath.” This is confirmed in 2 Chron 23:8. The Temple was destroyed in 70 A.D and, according to rabbinical tradition; at the time of its destruction, the priestly course of Jehoiarib was serving. Unless the priestly service was broken sometime during those years between its destruction and John's father, (Abijab’s lot) Zacharius would have been serving the first week of “our” October. This puts Jesus’ conception in March and His birth right back in December. Neither yours nor mine calculations can be proven conclusively. Many assumptions MUST be made, as you correctly stated. Things like – did the annual feasts ever interrupt the order of courses? What happened every 3 years of so when another month was added to their calendar? So, to reiterate the importance of "Christmas" once again – Christ the Lord WAS born, the angels rejoiced, the shepherds rejoiced – why can’t we, who benefit more than those who witnessed the actual event, rejoice louder?
