Bible Question: Mark 10:21 Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, "One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." Wouldnt this be a referance of trying to measure ones goodness compared to that of Christ? |
Bible Answer: Trying to measure ones goodness compared to that of Christ? I guess in a way, the young man realized he was missing something. Something Jesus had that he wanted. It appears he thought that eternal life was a "reward" and was asking Jesus what good thing he should do to inherit it. Eternal life is a gift of grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus first addressed the young ruler's statement rather than the question. You call me good. Only God is good. Jesus was indirectly acknowledging his deity. Then Jesus answered the question. The rich young ruler asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus answered. You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother. 20"Teacher," he declared, "all these I have kept since I was a boy." 21Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." Jesus said " do not murder, steal, lie, steal etc. all of theses man can obey. The key to this verse is in what Jesus did not say. Jesus did not mention the first two commandments. Thou shall love God with all your heart... and thou shall not have other gods. Jesus was pointing out to this young man that he was not obeying all the commandments. He had ignored the first two commandments. His god was his riches (money). In verse 24, Jesus said "“Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! NKV Are you asking if we should compare our goodness to the goodness of Christ to see if can measure up? That effort would be futile. Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it (faith) is the gift of God; 9 not because of works, so that no one may boast. NASB I hope this helps. God Bless you. jcdm327 |
