Bible Question:
He felt that the Bible was trying to make the way of salvation too easy. First it says all we have to do is receive Jesus. But then it seems to say we don’t even have to do that much. If we only believe on his name; that is enough. He was wrestling with John 1:12. How would you help him? How would you explain it? Some passages of Scripture indicate we can be saved by believing the message of the Gospel. For example, in 1 Corinthians 15 Paul speaks of the gospel that he preached, which they had received, by which they were saved. In 1 John 5:1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. Other passages say we are saved by believing on the person of Christ. For example, in Acts 16:31 they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved”. In John 3:36 “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life”. Still other passages require faith in his name. For example, in Matthew 12:21 as noted, “In his name shall the Gentiles trust”. In 1 John 5:12 it is those who believe on the name of the Son of God who have eternal life. We have already referred to John 1:12. Who can explain this focus on the name? |
Bible Answer: It seems to me that the missing ingredient in this picture is the idea of "follow through." When a person really does completely believe in someone or something, they respond in complete obedience to the commands or whatever statements come out of that person or being. I think Naaman's story is quite instructive here. He was looking for a demonstration of majestic and awesome power and instead, Elisha told him through a messenger to dip himself in a dirty ole river not once but seven times. He went home disgusted but with no healing. But finally upon obedience and dipping himself in the River Jordan as instructed, he was healed completely; his skin was a clean and look like that of a baby. Notice he didn't get the healing he was looking for; not one iota until the seventh dip. Here on earth, when a child truly believes his earthly parents, he/she puts ALL his faith and trust in that parent. No wonder why our Lord used children as an example to us. We simply MUST follow through with our belief and simply obey God's commands if we truly want what He's offering us as His children. I hope this helps and Blessings to you. Country Girl |
