NASB | Galatians 5:16 ¶ But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Galatians 5:16 ¶ But I say, walk habitually in the [Holy] Spirit [seek Him and be responsive to His guidance], and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of the sinful nature [which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts]. |
Bible Question: What does walk mean? |
Bible Answer: Greetings ShepherdPaul, Galatians 5:16 exhorts us to 'walk by the Spirit', which is described in the 10 verses that follow that verse... Verse 17 helps us to differentiate between the desires of the Spirit and the desires of the flesh, Verse 18 tells us that we are not under the law if led by the Spirit, Verses 19-21 describe the desires of the flesh, and that those who practice those will not inherit the kingdom of God, Verses 22-23 describe the desires of the Spirit, saying that against such desires there is no law. "And those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires." (v. 24) Therefore, "walk" in verse 16 means "live". "If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit." (v. 25) And Verse 26 concludes by giving more exhortations about what we need to avoid if we are walking by the Spirit. - Makarios |
