Bible Question:
2 Corinthians 8:9 Paul is urging the church to give. He says Jesus was rich and became poor. It appears Paul is talking about finances here I don't know my Gospels cover to cover but when I read about Jesus I never get the sense he was ever fiscally rich. What do you think on this issue. Can we believe that Paul is talking about spirituality combined with Blessings that came from God and allowed Jesus and his desciples to be provided for as they traveled from place to place? Bottom line....Before crucifying and resurrection, how well off was Jesus and where how do we know? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Roark89, There are several passages that allude to Christ as being humble and without any kind of monetary wealth or riches of His own.. Matthew 8:20 "And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head." [ESV] Luke 9:58 "And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head." [ESV] Matthew 22:19 "Show me the coin for the tax." And they brought him a denarius." [ESV] Matthew 17:27 "However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself." [ESV] Matthew 27:9-10 "Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel, and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me." [ESV] Mark 15:24 "And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take." [ESV] No, Jesus did not live a life of monetary wealth. Blessings to you, Makarios |
